About Sally Fuller
I am an award-winning photographer whose images have been selected for exhibits by galleries across the country. My photographic pursuits involve both a passion for nature and an extension of my academic interests. In my academic career I studied the sociology of organizations with a focus on symbolism and the figurative representation of concrete objects. I apply that academic approach to my photography.
I grew up in western Pennsylvania and was drawn to animals and nature from an early age. As a child I was happiest exploring the local woods, catching salamanders and picking violets and lilies of the valley. Continuing throughout adulthood, I still feel most at peace when I am immersed in a natural setting. My photographic pursuits represent a logical extension of seeing and appreciating nature. Although I also enjoyed a career as a professor, art and photography have always been an important part of my life. I have been fortunate to live, work and travel across several continents, but Florida is home. My passion is in finding and interpreting nature's beauty in diverse settings from backyard flowers and butterflies, to Florida's natural wonders, to the plains of Africa. Through my nature photography, my goals are to create images that go beyond the visual depiction to evoke emotion, spur reflection, and encourage the appreciation of beauty that surrounds us. My work represents a variety of processing methods. Some photographs are presented in a pure natural form. Others are converted to monochrome interpretations. And some are enhanced with textures and layers to create more painterly images.
In addition to nature, another area of artistic expression that piqued my interest was the small towns throughout America. Drawing on my academic background in symbolism and culture, I use photography to document the essence of small towns and to examine the lives of the people who call those towns home. Despite having lived exclusively in medium to large sized cities, I felt a constant draw to what I perceived as the simpler life of small towns, curious about their cultures and the reality of everyday life there. To satisfy this curiosity, I created The Photographic Journey Through Small Town America project, giving me the opportunity to explore this ubiquitous aspect of America. I spent two years on this project, traveling through 48 states, logging 45,000 miles on my RV, and documenting nearly 400 towns. I have published a series of books with these small-town images.
